Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.

DAY 1: RISE OF THE RUNELORDS: CHAPTER ONE
BURNT OFFERINGS

And so our story begins. The PCs arrive for the happy festival.

Sunday, Rova 1 (the first day of autumn), 4707 AR:

As one approaches the town of Sandpoint, the footprint of civilization upon the Lost Coast grows more clear. Farmlands in the outlying moors and river valleys grow more numerous, and the blue-green waters of the Varisian Gulf bear more and more fishing vessels upon its surface. Passage over creeks and rivers is more often accomplished by wooden bridge than ford, and the Lost Coast Road itself grows wider and better-kept. Sight of Sandpoint from either approach (south or east) is kept hidden by the large upthrust limestone pavements known as the Devil’s Platter or the arc of rocky outcroppings known as Whistler’s Tors, but as the final bend in the road is rounded, Sandpoint’s smoking chimneys and bustling streets greet the traveler with open arms and the promise of warm beds, a welcome sight indeed for those who have spent the last few days alone on the Lost Coast Road.

The sight that strikes all visitors to Sandpoint at first is the ruins of the Old Light. The Old Light rises from sea level and is built into the face of a 120-foot-tall cliff , the tower extending another 50 feet above that level to culminate in ragged ruins.

From the south, entrance to Sandpoint is governed by a wooden bridge, while from the north a low stone wall gives the town a bit of protection. Here, the Lost Coast Road passes through a stone gatehouse that is generally watched by one or two guards – the southern bridge is typically unattended. Aside from the occasional goblin, the citizens of Sandpoint have traditionally had little worries about invasion or banditry – the region simply isn’t populated enough to make theft a lucrative business. Hanging from a bent nail at both the gatehouse and the southern bridge is a sign and a mirror – painted on each sign is the message: “Welcome to Sandpoint! Please stop to see yourself as we see you!”

The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, on the first day of autumn. The square before the church quickly becomes crowded as locals and travelers arrive, and several merchant tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs are there to meet them.

Session One/Two - The Swallowtail Festival

Travelers from near and far have descended with merriment on the town of Sandpoint – some came by choice in a caravan, some came from a very long journey, and some not even knowing why they were there. But, after some lengthy speeches, the Swallowtail Festival began in full swing! The party found their respective fortes and managed to overcome obstacles to gain rewards of renown, splendor…and horrible smells.

  • Sen Tash made it to 4 in the Pixie’s Kiss and won a prize in Riddles and Rhyme (picking up a Wand of Protection from Evil).
  • After much coin and a great deal of effort, Lia Holimion succeeded in Harker’s Trickshot, winning a magical (and utterly unnerving) bow! Lia also completed the Devil Hunt.
  • Kalen Reynard bested the Riddles and Rhyme (gaining a Wand of Cure Wounds), charmed the Uncharmable Woman, and made to 15 at the Pixie’s Kiss.
  • Áine charmed the Uncharmable Woman, truly smashed the Lighthouse Smash, completed the Goblin Toss, and did a great deal of gathering “loose coin” (especially pickpocketing a pickpocketer)
  • The man who would be become Eric Mutt drank the Hagfish Water (carving his name into the ceiling), completed the Ogre Stomp, ran the Red Barrow Run, made it to 19 in the Pixie’s Kiss (only stopping when offered free food), and became a local legend when he triumphed against the Gauntlet!

No matter what the events of the day, everyone had a chance to indulgence in virtue or vice, skill or relaxation; Áine had the chance to give back to the local orphanage, Kalen got the chance to play his music, and Sen finally got the chance to eat. The crowds gathered once again at the steps of the newly built cathedral as the sun began to set. But the peace and joy of the day that had built a wall of comfort in the minds of the people was shattered by one unexpected visitor – goblins!

Session Three - GOBLINS!

After five years of peace, the town of Sandpoint erupted with unprovoked violence by a goblin warband. Slaughtering all who got in their way, the goblins descended upon the town. Amid the chaos, there were a few people who stood tall – some however reluctantly – and fought against the raging tide. Eric wade into battle with his maul, turning into goblin jelly anything that got in his way. Lia fired arrows across the village square, wounding or sending to their deaths the little beasts. Kalen and Áine stuck together, Kalen singing words of inspiration and Áine fending the goblin off…until he fell asleep for some reason. Sen, however, seemed reluctant to attack; something in him wasn’t the “killing sort.”

The first wave of goblins was routed, but the people had fled into mass hysteria. As the new heroes rushed the important families of Sandpoint into the cathedral and the doors began to close, the sheriff stood alone against a goblin group, including a crazed wardog! The group -some however reluctantly – would not let the sheriff face his doom alone. Eric and Lia focused their attention on the sheriff, Lia taking shots at the wardog and Eric going for any goblin he could find. Kalen and Sen, however, worked on a second point – a noble had been cornered by three goblins, defended only by his valiant hound. In the end, the hound was slain and the sheriff had neared been killed as well (if not for a small healing spell from Kalen). Yet the goblins had been routed; the noble, a man by the name of Aldern Foxglove, was alive and well; and the town was herded into the cathedral while the town guards searched for the last few goblins.

Sen did not take well to having killed. No one really did. But the whispers began.

Why did the goblins attack? And who were these new heroes in town?

Session Eight - The Possibility of Goblins

As the soldiers continued to scour the Glassworks, a journal belonging to Tsuto was found, and it was handed off to Sen. After a ritual to read the language, the book was a mixture of journal entries, erotic pictures, and the strategies and diagrams of the first raid and plans for a greater raid. It appears that Tsuto has found a lover in Nualia, the adopted daughter of the deceased Fr. Tobyn. Nualia herself was thought dead in the fire that claimed her adopted father and the previous cathedral. It appears that the Father’s bones taken during the raid started a chain of event to purge the celestial nature out of Nualia, summon something called Malfeshnekor, and deliver the destruction of Sandpoint to an old world god called Lamashtu.

This discovery cause great difficulty among the group, with questions of when the raid would occur (tonight?) and what could possibly be done to protect the city and its inhabitants. The majority of the party spoke with the Mayor, hoping to summon people to the cathedral – the most defensible point in Sandpoint; the mayor agreed to this “drill.” Kalen spoke with Vorvashali Voon about what was shown in the journal. While Voon didn’t have much knowledge on the catacombs, he was able to figure out that the rituals that Nualia are enacting would take several weeks to finish.

Ameiko finally awoke, telling Áine that Tsuto had called her to the Glassworks to tell her to leave. He had “big plans” for Sandpoint and didn’t want her to be in town when it happened. The news of her father’s death was earth-shattering, but she was able to relay a little information in that the catacombs would be somewhere in the Smuggler’s Tunnel.

The group let the mayor know that they would be entering the Smuggler’s Tunnel in search of the Catacombs. Who knows where it will be…or what will be waiting when it is found.
